Concerning Hamburg´s huge city transformation “Hafencity“ from the 90´s, the financial crisis increased social problems and simultaniously generated a higher demand for civil participation. This urges the authorities to rethink their approach of its top-down masterplanning strategy for this area. They try to react with an approach to implement the „creative class“ to make accommodation more attractive and intend to absorb the intensive building costs by constructing denser as formerly planed. As a result the affected areas remain rather expensive. They give birth to an exclusive community which ignores many elementary needs of the general population.

The area of „Kleiner Grasbrook“ will be the next step inside the supra-regional idea of a leap over the river Elbe trying to connect splintered parts of urban tissue between Hamburg-City and Harburg in the south. After projecting the island of „Wilhelmsburg“ with „IBA“ – the international building fair and „IGS“ – fair for town and country planning, „Kleiner Grasbrook“ will be the last step to complete the urban axis stretching north to south. First step is to transform the huge market hall and its administration tower into a strong hub for urban pioneers and creative actors. The aim is to promote the area for further inhabitants and to bring it into the focus of city life and cultural activity. By involving social and creative value the target group of citizens will be divers and broadly based. Using this effect and involving diverse participation-processes will generate a bottom-up evolution of the whole quarter. In addition to this, a strategic idea of using the different building values and infrastructural incidences to keep the investments affordable and realistic will be promoted. This combination of establishing new variations of classical town-planing tools and grass-root movement could guide a new urban evolution.

Our way of rethinking the transformation of industrial areas tries to generate an integral and dynamic masterplan. We think in different chronolgical phases, influenced by different users with heterogenous and versatile preferences. To be sustainable means not only to reach high standards of heat insulation and materialistic exclusivity, it is as well obligatory to integrate existing civic social networks, infrastructures, regional identity and in this specific case the subsisting flood protection of the area „Kleiner Grasbrook“. That implies that the developed city structure follows not an ideal and known morphology but must be constructed within the given constraints of the plot. Our approach integrates the temporary use of existing builldings and open spaces, a fragmented housing structure for different social groups and an urban grid for neighborhoods with negotiating boundaries. To forward a multivalent society it will be an area for joint building ventures, private dwellings and real estate investors which operate in balance.

The aim of this competition was to redefine the heterogeneous structure of Herrenberg. The inner city of Herrenberg suffer from a high dense of traffic, forced by two interstate roads crossing in the centre of this wonderful middle age building structure. The mission was to solve this traffic problem, to bring in a high number of housing and finaly to develop a strong concept for future growth. 711LAB and raumspielkunst drawed a bunch of lines tanged to the existing structure. This lines defining the fields which can be completed by implementing the different needed functions like housing, commerce, offices and the new central park along the railway. All parts will be connected by a compact grid of bicycle and pedestrian roads negotiating present barriers. This solution was chosen to the group of final input.

Our competition entry for St. Paulus church in Balingen-Frommern was selected as a finalist input. At the end we got no prize but the project was mentioned as a clear and competent solution. The idea for the concept was to arrange a new courtyard around the existing steeple grouping the church, the parsonage and the community centre at the border. The gate to it is formed by a square of trees ranging up to the street. The newly built church is a precise retangle with a excessive yoke for exposure. Its inner configuration is formed by pushed-in adjoining rooms and the central canvas defining the liturgical elements. We did this competition in ccoperation with 711Lab from Stuttgart. The energy concept was done by Bautechnik-Beyer.

The University of Hohenheim has a high demand for student carrels. Given the situation, of course, no budget exists, we have designed a flexible space. The cell stands alone, or can be used in groups. For the production, we have thought of an industrial partner from the automotive industry who know how to produce the geometrically simple sandwich elements and and can act as sponsor. The idea of the flexible units promotes the usability of the niches on the sprawling campus and constitutes a unique position in the race for the best students. We hope to implement the concept with local partners soon.

We were asked six weeks ago, if we can implement existing plans for an Asian restaurant until December. Of course, we have accepted the job but changed the plan for our concepts. The focus is a gastronomic experience that is anchored between European and Asian cultures. A large pedestal with recessed alcoves changes its usability along the central ramp. This element, together with the bar facility represent the central focus of the “Noir”-concept. Together with Florian Lachenmann we are looking forward to generate a conceptual Architecture concentrating on black and gold atmospheres. Watch out for further infomation.

The Museum is a response to urban mobility and the concept of the “commuter,” specific to the metropolitan area of Washington DC. The Floating Museum symbolically transforms a truck, normally used for selling tacos, into a moving museum. It functions under the premises of accessibility, participation, pertinence, roaming, and integration of displaced communities. The Floating Museum disperses ideas, constantly adapting itself to the urban environment. It moves concepts from abstraction into tangible form, becoming a platform for the interchange of experiences. The Floating LAB Collective asked the Akademy of fine Arts in Stuttgart to develop a multifunctional add-on to generate a more flexible use of their van. Underneath you can see the concept of raumspielkunst.

The Academy of the other city envisions the inner city of Kaiserslautern as an integrated educational, cultural and commercial space – a place for learning and research as well as exchange of different cultures and experiences. Starting with empty shops generating the initial momentum for spatial and social improvement, The Academy of the other city cultivates specific forms of studying, teaching, learning and earning, with its own curriculum that asks for active appropriation and entrepreneurial engagement. Sustainable urban patterns not only emerge from the physically built but also from the network of human relations and neighbourhood. Within the context of general urban transformation processes The Academy of the other city uses a new form of knowledge transfer between citizens for a very local approach. As an urban strategy it addresses structural, social, cultural and economic aspects. It accepts the present situation, acts on its inherent conditions and develops new forms of interventions. This approach is opportunistic, because it interprets the present as the ideal. At the same time this approach is optimistic, because it talks about opportunities and not about problems. This mixture of opportunism and optimism is most appropriately called opportimism.

table & chair: By upgrading abandonend shops with basic low-cost elements like tables and chairs The Academy of the other city forms a citywide network of learning spaces and transforms the urban space into an academic realm. Formal institutions like universities and schools join forces with informal initiatives for education and integration.

claiming weekend: The Academy of the other city is not a formal institution. Hence all available spaces are annually released to provide customized exchange of ideas and spaces. Instead of the prom ceremony of usual educational institution The Academy of the other city hosts an annual claiming weekend throughout the whole inner city.

workshop: At the wonderland Project Space workshop from September 25 to 27 a pilot of The Academy of the other city is set to start. It will be realised by raumspielkunst and 711LAB, one of three teams choosen by wonderland jury out of 90 others.

Raumeins and raumspielkunst cooperated for a competition to design a new facade for the banking house “Sparkasse” in Leer, Germany. The proposed design solution intended a fragmented accumulation of facades to break-down the irresponsibly large volume. The choice for the brickwork comes from the typical construction in northern Germany. The different parts of the facade sections derive from the inner structure. The result was placed in the top group, but the owner opted for a different participant. At the end it will be a large glass-steel-crystal, which we not believe to be an adequate solution.

The Innovation Centre provides the bridge between the Aalen University of Applied Sciences and the region with its booming economy and is called “EU flagship project”. As a place of research and development, the draft puts the focus on its communicative heart of air spaces and kitchens. The compact structure held blends unobtrusively into the given campus structure and mediates with its modern facade between the stock and the necessary selling point. Unfortunately, the jury decided for another suggestion. Too bad, we find our solution better still. The concept was done in cooperation with HPP GmbH & Co.KG from Düsseldorf.

For the design of a elementary school with a separate day home for schoolchildren, we did in cooperation with HPP GmbH & Co.KG situated in Düsseldorf, we got a honorable mention. The design of the Viatisschool focused on sustainable building conditions and an intelligent use of land. The new building should be designed around the existing one, which later should be ripped off. The second important mission was to preserve the given stock of trees. We develloped a two story bar which follows the sun and complete the existing city structure. Nice and gentle said the Jury, we too!

Therefore raumspielkunst created a powerful tool to decrease any stress deriving from acoustic environment. This urban intervention illutrates that noise couldn´t be excluded. It shows on the one hand the motorized people it´s role as source of sound and on the other hand it gives inhabitants the possibility of learning more about citynoises. The installation is a playground for interested inhabitants and is designed as a mobile structure for a worldwide access. Citynoises are worldwide troublemakers.

It spots the walking distances under 400m, which means 5 minutes by feet. This architectural analysis of the “Sprung über die Elbe” shows the different existing centres between Hamburg city and Harburg. This cityscan will be the starting point for further developments around “Kleiner Grasbrook”, a actually by the harbour characterized plot in the north of Wilhelmsburg, a part of IBA and IGS. The analysis visualize that there is a need of connectivity in the direct vis-à-vis of the Hafencity.

Cook, Greene and Webb met in 1961, collaborated on the first Archigram magazine, later inviting Herron, Chalk and Crom- pton to join them, and the magazine name stuck to them as a group.

This new bespoke home for a couple was designed and built to high standards of sustainability by our partners raumeins from Leer. The typology organizes the required rooms around a central court which serves as intimate outdoor space in the heart of the u-shaped house. Its economic timber frame structure meets a high insulation standard while reducing construction time significantly. The wooden frame construction was prefabricated and delivered in large transportable elements which were connected on site.

The Citycouncil of Backnang asked Herwartharchitekten and raumspielkunst to design a new kindergarten. The concept was on the one hand enriched with functions like a community and family centre and on the other hand forced by a difficult shaped plot of land. The space for all needed functions was higher than the buildable space allowed. So we had to arrange the playground on the rooftop. The advantage is the totaly free inner courtyard as entrance area of the citizens hall.

If you need to get clear of what you design, and how the connectiveness in urban space works – you use the analysing tool called “Spacesyntax” of the UCL. Space Syntax is the world´s first computer-based modelling technique to treat cities and buildings. It shows how movement patterns and flows in cities are powerfully shaped by the street network, how the relation shapes the evolution of the local centres and sub-centres that makes cities liveable. raumspielkunst was part of a workshop at Academy of fine arts in Stuttgart and we learned how to use this techniques to design more powerful structures. For more information look at: UCL developed Spacesyntax

This building in Arnhem, the Netherlands was designed and built to offer three
different types of schools a new home. Its program is an innovative approach to fulfill requirements of a flexible and versatile education. A basement floor forms a layer for technical and practical facilities. The five building areas above technical and practical facilities contain the classrooms of the three distinctive school types (VMBO, VMBO+, Praktijk Onderwijs), a sporting hall and canteen. The roof of the lower level also provides shelter for the parking area, a glasshouse for practical exercises and technical support functions. Its sloped, low profile on the park-side reduces the massive appearance of the structure whilst blending to the area. The project was completed 2009. The building was designed by Gabriel Kiderlen, now director of raumspielkunst, Siebold Nijenhuis and Han Rotgans for the office Broekbakema.
